Fireworks and hearing protection
Bonfire night will shortly be upon us and as exciting as this night can be, with exploding rockets and sizzling sparklers, take a moment to think about the impact this noisy festival can have on your hearing and your child’s.
Did you know that fireworks can reach up to 130dB in noise, that’s equivalent to a jet taking off on a runway?! Firework noise can cause temporary and permanent hearing damage, including tinnitus, the persistent ringing in the ears.
With the following precautions, you and your family can enjoy the evening of whizzes and bangs, keeping your hearing intact!
Keep your distance
The further away you stand from the display the better – the decibels are reduced and the firework explosion is less likely to affect your hearing.
A distance of 500 feet won’t create the sound pressure that can damage the tiny hair cells in the inner ear.
Wear earplugs
Inexpensive and easy to use, ear plugs offer excellent hearing protection. Earmuffs are also a good option to protect your children’s ears.
Know how loud is too loud
Sounds above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss, temporary and permanent.
There are mobile apps available that can measure sound, but a general rule of thumb is to avoid noises that are too loud, too close, or that last too long.
